In the first Premier League market value update since the coronavirus cut in April, over 100 players received a new market value. Among the biggest winners are winter signing Bruno Fernandes, who has made Manchester United invincible in the league since his arrival, his 18-year-old teammate Mason Greenwood, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, Man City’s homegrown talent Phil Foden, Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka and Caglar Söyüncü of Leicester. Among the biggest losers are three players who moved to London for record fees in 2018 and 2019.

Fernandes, Saka & Co.: Top market value winners of the Premier League update

Nine wins, five draws and 15 goal involvements: This impressive record is registered in Bruno Fernandes’ TM profile since February 1 – there is not much more possible for a footballer who moved to a foreign country in the winter transfer window. The attacking midfielder arrived from Sporting on January 29 for €55 million, made the Red Devils the best team in the league and led them to the Champions League. As a result, the Portuguese is the biggest winner of the update, rising from €48 million to now €70 million.

The form and market value charts also show a steep upward trend for other Manchester United players – the big winners after the coronavirus restart: Anthony Martial (+10 to €58m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (+8 to 40), Marcus Rashford (+16 to 80) and Mason Greenwood (+16 to 45). The latter is now the most valuable teenager in the Premier League and sits tenth in the overall ranking of the most valuable English players. Rashford meanwhile has finally found consistency and shares the top spot in the club’s internal market value ranking with Paul Pogba. All in all, the record champions increase their squad value by almost €70 million.

At current titleholders Liverpool, there are a total of five changes: Dejan Lovren, who will be leaving for Zenit St. Petersburg, will drop from €16 million to €12 million, right-back talent Neco Williams will start with a market value of €4 million, while Naby Keïta and Joe Gomez will each rise from €33.5 million to €40 million. Trent Alexander-Arnold, arguably the best right-back in the world, earns himself a plus of €11 million and is now back at his pre-coronavirus value of €110 million. As a result, Liverpool will surpass the €1 billion mark in terms of squad value at least until August 1 – from then on Lovren will officially be part of Zenit’s squad.

The €1 billion barrier is also cracked by Manchester City, where Phil Foden is the biggest winner. Daniel Busch, Area Manager UK, says: “When he played, he usually attracted positive attention and was involved in many goals. Since the restart he gets significantly more minutes from Guardiola and has the chance to take over David Silva’s role next season.” The 20-year-old midfielder rises from €27 million to €40 million.

The 18-year-old was directly involved in 15 goals in his first senior season and earned himself a contract until 2024 in early July. In this update, the London-born winger rises from €20 million to €35 million – Saka was one of the few bright spots of Arsenal’s season.

For record signing Nicolas Pépé, the first year as a Gunner was a disappointment, however. Signed from Lille for €80 million, the Ivorian was only directly involved in 11 goals in 31 Premier League matches – the consequence: The third cut in a row, this time from €52 million to €45 million. If the most expensive and best-paid player in the club’s history fail to deliver, then in the end the club just finishes in 8th place. Mesut Özil, who earns a gross salary of around €20 million a year for his three goal involvements in 18 matches, could hardly contribute anything to this. The World Cup winner did not play a role under coach Mikel Arteta recently and receives the sixth minus in a row – a downgrade from €17.5 million to €12 million.

Tanguy Ndombélé is another record transfer, who arrived in London in the summer of 2019. Having moved from Lyon to Tottenham for €60 million, he initially switched between the starting eleven and the bench under former manager Mauricio Pochettino. Under José Mourinho, he was mostly on the bench or in the stands. “Ndombélé only played 64 minutes in the Premier League after the restart and was already criticised publicly by Mourinho in January due to several fitness problems and minor injuries. Since then, he is said to have still not shown the right reaction in training, a departure in the summer is not completely rules out,” England expert Busch says. The France international receives a minus of €7 million to now €45 million.

The discrepancy is even bigger in the case of Chelsea’s record signing Kepa, who in 2018 became the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of football thanks to a fee of €80 million. Now, the Spaniard is going down from €32 million to €28 million. “Kepa has not found consistency throughout the season and Chelsea are already looking for a new number one keeper. In the last match of the season, when a Champions League spot was still on the line, Lampard put him on the bench, as he already did for five competitive matches in February,” Busch said.

Outside of the big six clubs, Leicester are one of the biggest winners in terms of squad value with James Maddison (+7 to 55), Wilfred Ndidi (+9 to 45), Caglar Söyüncü (+8 to 40) and Harvey Barnes (+4, 5 to 22), accompanied by Wolves with Rúben Neves (+10 to 50), Adama Traoré (+9.5 to 35), Leander Dendoncker (+5.5 to 28) and Daniel Podence (+5 to 17).

In the bottom half of the table, Jack Grealish (+9.5 to 40), who played a main role in Aston Villa staying up on the final matchday, Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin (+8 to 28), Burnley’s Dwight McNeil (+7 to 25), West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen (+9 to 25) and former Bayern Munich player Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg (+8 to 20) received some of the biggest upgrades. Höjberg is linked with a move from Southampton to Tottenham.
