International may be seen by some as an intrusive barrier to domestic football throughout the season, but for many of the sport’s biggest players it is another opportunity to showcase their talents and continue in their efforts to win silverware and fame for their country. And this international break’s fixtures have proven to be exactly that, with some of the biggest stars in the world scoring goals and breaking records.

Ronaldo extends lead at the top of the leaderboard

Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed his spot as the player with the most international goals in the history of the sport some time ago, but that doesn’t mean the forward has any intention of slowing down. That was evident in Portugal’s recent European qualifier against Slovakia, which saw the Al-Nassr striker bag no less than two goals in his nation’s 3-2 victory in Porto. That now means that his nation have not only extended their lead at the top of the qualifying group to a massive eight points but that Ronaldo’s tally for Portugal now stands at 125 goals in 202 games - an incredible 16 goals more than second-placed Ali Daei of Iran

Mbappe France goals

Mbappé moves into fourth place in French all-time goalscoring list

It wasn’t just Ronaldo that was hoovering up the goals in this international break. France and Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé was also quick to make short work of the break, with two more goals to his international tally in an impressive 2-1 win over the Netherlands. The young forward’s brace now means that he has 42 goals in 72 games for his country - a record that has now surpassed Michel Platini’s tally and is behind just three players in the history of the France international team. Ahead of the world's joint most valuable player are Antoine Griezmann (44 goals), Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (54). But it seems like only a matter of time before the 24-year-old talent climbs to the top of that list.
